[When the audio clicks on, it's very quiet - the sort of silence that's bone deep, the kind you feel in the middle of the woods during a snow storm. Tim takes his time before speaking, and when he does, his voice is a little deeper than usual.]

I hate the snow. Just reminds me of the times Gotham almost froze over. Kind of reminds me of Gotham in general, I guess. There's all this pure, untouched snow - and then you walk, or drive through it, and it gets ruined, mixes with dirt, turns to slush and soaks through your clothes until all you can feel is cold.

I hate it.

[The audio clicks off, but a few beats later, it comes back:] I think there's an attic. I'm gonna check it out.

Everything still feeling, uh - not deteriorating? [He's a little less delicate than normal, but it's not ringing an alarm bells for him.]

I'm heading up. Anyone want to come?

[A beat, and he takes a sharp breath, then lets it out. Whatever concerned him stopped concerning him pretty quickly.] And yell if you find anything interesting. I want to look around.

[It's easier to just go and find Tim, rather than waste time talking over the comm. Not incredibly easy, because he's Tim and Tims are hard to track, but she finds him fast enough.]

Team up? Will be like... old times.

[Even though for her those old times were only a few months ago.]

[He isn't far from the room he and Luther were assigned to, heading for the stairs up. He hears her just before she speaks - or he thinks he does, because there's something that makes him turn toward her. He doesn't smile immediately, but it comes after a second, along with a shrug.]

Not that old for you, though. [They hadn't tried to kill each other yet, she hadn't framed him for murder yet. But none of that makes him tense, none of it makes him react at all, really. He nods toward the stairs.]

Sure. You can deal with the rats, if there are any.

[Something is off, she sees it right away, but Cass doesn't bring it up. He's not automatically attacking or thinking she's someone else, so it can't be that bad, right?]

Will protect you.

[She moves to the stairs and looks up them, frowns a little.]

What do you think... is up there?

[I don't need you protecting me he thinks, but he bites it back at the last moment. Where did that come from? He frowns, and shrugs at her question, taking the steps two at a time. When he reaches the hatch, he pulls the handle toward him. It's locked, but he'd gone fishing for the right key in the lobby already, and pulled it from his pocket.]

Old furniture, probably. Maybe some books and old papers. This place looks old. It's probably packed full.

[There's a moment when she thinks she hears someone say, he doesn't want you around, quit bothering him, but when she looks behind them, there's no one there. She doesn't like that thought, so she moves a little closer to him as though just closeness with chase those bad feelings away.]

Why do you... want to see?

[Maybe there's something up there they can take back onto the barge? She's not sure, but Tim always has good ideas. It's easy to follow him.]

I do not understand the significance.

Snow is merely the result of low temperatures crystalizing precipitation so that it falls to the ground in a powdery, frozen substance. It is a naturally occurring process. So is dirt. Is it strange for the two to mix?

So far, so good. My psychic therapy sessions have been going well too. I've got a decent grasp on the images that are still in my mind and some of the more extreme ones were removed.

[He glances at her when she comes closer, and tries not to be wary of it. It's just Cass. It's just Cass.

He shrugs.]

Some old books, maybe some history about the world. Maybe Gotham exists here. It hasn't, in most other places we've made port.

[And that pricks at him a lot, that his city can just not exist somewhere.

I wouldn't expect you to understand. [There's almost a growl in his voice, a scoff, something derisive and uninterested.]

Good. I'd hate to have a repeat of your last rampage.

[...that stings. Even without the hotel's effects, there would have been a noticeable reaction within her circuitry. The atmosphere only amplified the hurt.]

[His tone is clipped, dismissive, and he would never write people off like this normally, but here he is, doing just that.]

[Meanwhile, hers gets softer and more timid as the conversation goes on.]
