La Belle et la Bête? I had not learned the proper level of the French language to ever read so well as I would have liked. Will the movie not be equally difficult to understand?
[Elizabeth wasted no time other than to secure the appearance of her hair into something more presentable. In only four minutes, she had quit her room to depart toward the common room, thankful that she had chosen a green dress relatively suited to public appearance.
As soon as she had arrived, finding the room empty, the girl moved near the box she had been told could display such things as "movie" and "film". Perhaps Tim would be willing to show her a film after their movie had completed! There was such potential.]
[Tim took the stairs two at a time. He hadn't had this much sleep since his dad found out he was Robin and made him quit. All that energy was weird, and he really needed to work it off. Somehow.
So he was in the common room soon enough, DVD in hand, and when he saw her waiting, Tim smiled.]
Hey, [he said, striding toward the television. He crouched to fiddle with things before pausing to look back at her.] Do you want me to show you how it works? So you can do it on your own, if you ever want to.
[Elizabeth moved to curtsy and stopped when he went straight to work. She was caught in the awkward partial movement only a second before she stood properly again. Then the warden offered him a smile and a nod, gliding forward to see what he was doing.] "Yes, please. If you believe it to be something I am capable of learning."
[He hadn't seen the curtsy; if he had, there would have been a wonderfully awkward attempt at a bow. Tim smiled up at her, and handed over the DVD case.]
Sure it is. Honestly, it's just a bunch of pressing buttons. This one turns on the television; this turns on the DVD player. That, [he said, turning to point at the case] holds a DVD. [He showed her how to open it.] See the shiny side? That's where the movie's kept. It's written into it - not like traditional writing, though. If that side gets scratched, a lot of times the movie won't play.
[He turned and opened the DVD tray, gesturing her forward.] All you have to do is place it in here, shiny side down.
[Elizabeth watched him intently, endeavoring to learn everything that he was saying. The movie being written onto the shiny side of a circle hardly made sense, but she trusted him to know what he was doing. She held the case in her hands loosely as he opened it, then removed the Circle and set the shiny side down into the player as instructed.] "Whatever does DVD mean? Generally such titles are representations of longer names."
[It was the kind of thing which she could not learn on her own through only one try, but which she expected she could come to learn over time with practice.] "How does concealing the 'DVD' help to display it?"
It stands for Digital Video Disc, I think, [Tim said, smiling.] DVD's a lot simpler, though. And we aren't hiding it, exactly. You press this button, and the tray pulls back into the DVD player. [He put his hand on the side of the player.] This machine reads what's written on the disc. It's not - not like typical reading. There are certain patterns on the DVD's shiny side, and those patterns tell this machine what to play. So those patterns are read, and we see a movie.
This button here starts the movie, once it's in. [Tim pressed play, and straightened.] It'll probably take more than one explanation, but don't worry too much about it.
[Elizabeth watched and nodded, nodded and watched. When he pressed play and stood, she joined him in proper posture once more. Gawking at the blank television, she began,] "It seems not to be--"
[At the emergence of the blue 'copyright' screen, she jumped a wee bit in sheer enthusiasm and clapped her hands to her mouth.] "It is not Beauty and the Beast, and yet it has worked! I admit I do not understand it, however."
[When it changed again, she took a few steps back to be able to see the screen properly.] "Why does it change?"
A DVD's a moving picture. That's what a movie is - oh, it's like a play, but without the live performance. Like it's been recorded forever, so anyone can watch it, whenever they want. [A grin tugged at the corner of his mouth at her excitement.] It'll go to the menu first - there, see. DVDs usually come with special features and the like, but here - we'll just play the movie. [He hit the select button on the DVD player, and gestured toward t he couch.] Now we can just watch.
[Elizabeth tried to move toward the couch while looking away as little as reasonably possible, taking up one side when she finally arrived. The girl sat on the edge, staring intently at the screen. The movie appeared to be drawings that moved! And continued to move, and to speak!! It was almost too much to bear.]
"Are there many of these in your world?" [She hazarded a silent guess of thirty at most, anxiously awaiting his response while simultaneously wanting nothing to pull her from the entertainment of the movie itself.]
[A grin tugged at the corners of Tim's mouth. He was starting to be glad he'd come here. He hadn't had reason to smile this much - without faking it completely - in a long time.] Hundreds, [he said with a shrug.] Probably more like thousands, actually. They're really popular.
"Thousands? All of different stories?" [She asked incredulously, not entirely certain that she believed him. After all, the sheer amount of time and effort that must have gone into the creation of such an art was obviously immense.
As the movie began, Elizabeth quickly quieted and would not allow her eyes to leave the screen. She blinked as rarely as she was able and eventually came to settle back into the couch a bit as they watched.]
All different ones, yeah. [He chuckled a little to himself andleaned back against the couch, watching idly. He couldn't remember the last time he'd watched a Disney movie. He'd probably been nine or - no, he was pretty sure he watched on with Arianna one night. Still, that was at least four years ago. Besides, Elizabeth's reaction was more interesting than the actual movie.]
Spam - Pretty sure Gaston was here while Elizabeth was, couldn't find evidence
[Elizabeth spent the entire film jubilant, exclaiming in reaction to the movie much like a small child would. How terrifying the beast was, she remarked, and how much Maurice was like her own father. Little, quiet comments all stated around whatever dialogue there was.]
"..We had a gentleman here by the name of Gaston whose physical appearance was quite as depicted." [A pause.] "I worry that this film does not do his true personality justice, if the writings of Pride and Prejudice are to be any indication."
[And then there was talk of killing the beast! But he was so sweet and kind!]
[Tim blinked, looking between the film and Elizabeth. He tapped his fingers against his leg with the beat of the song, running his other hand through his hair.] Seriously? I - well I guess I shouldn't really be surprised. [But Jesus, that was weird. He kept quiet until the end, smiling through her reactions. When the credits started to roll, he turned to her.]
[Elizabeth's eyes were still on the screen, watching the credits. Without any real knowledge, she assumed that those people were responsible for the creation of this masterpiece. She idly wondered what Dorothy McKim or John White might have been like, or how they might have gotten involved with this art.]
"I am quite in raptures." [She replied with a smile, finally turning to address him as the film returned to the menu screen.] "May we see it again tomorrow?"
Sure. [He hadn't realized how fun this could be. It had been a long time since he'd sat and watched a movie, before coming here.] But there are plenty of other movies you could watch.
I think it has a language setting, actually. You can watch it in French, if you wanted. With English subtitles. It might help you learn.
"You have more than one?" [She asked as if it were a person admitting to owning an elephant or holding the title of King before coming here. It was astounding, the idea.] "I desire to see all kinds!"
[Giving a moment's pause to the language idea, she quirked her lips into a lesser smile.] "If 'subtitles' are what I would expect them to be, I do not believe I could understand the movie well enough to enjoy it properly. Perhaps in the near future, when I have studied my languages again."
The ones I have aren't really like this. But we could ask around. I think Martha has a few others. [That astonishment had his lips quirking upward.]
Subtitles show the dialogue along the bottom of the screen. It's fine, though. I wasn't very good until I had to speak it to get by. [He wouldn't mention the training part...]
"What are yours like?" [She inquired innocently, delighted that this had worked out and that Tim was such the considerate and helpful gentleman that he was.]
"Ah, yes. I believe I could not manage it so well as to produce enjoyment."
I had a terrible time learning, so don't worry. [Might have had something to do with constantly being kicked in the face. Tim scratched the back of his head.]
I don't think you'd like them. They're horror movies. Scary, monsters, things like that. Not like this at all. [He nodded toward the television.]
"You are too kind." [She smiled at him a moment, then returned her gaze to the television. It wasn't meant to be awkward, just as another thank you for all of his generosity.]
"I would like to see one of your scary movies, I believe. It would not be fair for me to judge them without granting them an opportunity. Perhaps we could invite others as well? I am certain there are individuals who would enjoy this." [While it might be nice to share the experience with someone such as Sergeant Howie or Captain Aubrey, it was actually Mr Malfoy whom she was considering inviting; the boy needed to find friends.]
[Tim was very good at making awkward moments out of anything; so he tried to ignore it. Tried really hard.]
Uh, yeah, that'd be cool. When I met Martha, she talked about a two AM movie club; maybe we should just advertise and see who's interested. [It wasn't like there were many on board their age. Tim was already trying to figure out which movie wouldn't give people nightmares.]
"If you decide to do so, please keep me informed and I shall endeavor to help however I am able." [She wasn't entirely certain what he had said, but it sounded like a good idea and he seemed excited about it. He was being remarkably kind to her; the least she could do was try to return that favor.] "I consider any possible reason to witness an excess of these creations as a favorable sentiment."
Well, I imagine it must get kind of dull here, sometimes. And I don't have an inmate yet, so I've been feeling kind of useless. I'll see if we can organize something. [Because at least it would be something to do.]
"Wonderful. Thank you, sir." [She smiled and nodded, pleased at the prospect of such an event. It was fortunate that she had insisted Tim to be a rude individual, she mused, for he had turned out to be quite the gentleman and their potential for friendship was unparalleled by any others she had met recently.]
No problem. [He stood, retrieving the DVD and returning it to its case.] I guess it's getting kind of late. I'll see you around, Elizabeth. [He just called Elizabeth Bennet by her first name, and yet this was far from the most insane thing he'd gone through.]
[She stood as he did and watched him retrieve his DVD, then curtsied when he was looking at her to say goodbye. This time, he would not escape her manners.] "Have a pleasant evening, Tim."
[No, he wouldn't. Tim hesitated a moment before making an awkward bow, hand in front of his stomach. Bowing really wasn't something Bruce had ever trained him to do.] Uh, you too. Thanks.
[She cast a wide smile at his attempt of chivalry. He was almost charming.. in his own way. Elizabeth lingered until he began leaving as well, not wanting to move too ahead of him. But then she was on her way to her own room, still unable to stop smiling.]
My bet's on Beauty and the Beast.
Whatever gave it away
With a tag like "elizabeth fucking bennet", how can I not love you? <3
I am master of ridiculous tags. It helps that Tim's a geek and a fanboy.
Love it.
